Well, Dominic of Prussia and Alanus de Rupe were the real trailblazers when it came to the rosary prayer. That was back in the 15th century. Dominic the Carthusian (St. Alban, near Treves, around 1410) was a big advocate for a rosary with 50 Hail Marys and 50 Vita Christi clauses.
